dance classes FAQ
1. Do I need a partner to take lessons?
No, a partner is not necessary. Private lessons at Balliamos pair you with a professional dance instructor, helping you learn faster and develop proper technique from the beginning.
2. What should I wear for my dance lesson?
Comfortable clothing is the first priority, as are shoes that offer good support and allow you to slide on the floor (leather-soled shoes are good). If you want to wear heels, a 2-inch to 3-inch heel is recommended for beginning dancers. If you want to buy proper dance shoes, we recommend Worldtone Dance, www.worldtonedance.com.
3. Do I need prior dance training to learn partner dancing?
No, in fact, partner dancing is often called "social dancing" because it’s geared more toward learning finesse for social environments rather than "performing.” If you have a heartbeat, you have rhythm! Our qualified instructors are well-versed at teaching beginners the basics of rhythm and movement.
4. How can I get started?
Simply call Balliamos at 310-855-9855 to schedule an introductory private dance lesson.
5. Which is better for me, private lessons or group classes?
Private lessons offer the most concentrated instruction, as they are a one-on-one with an instructor and customized to suit your own pace and goals. They also offer more scheduling flexibility, so they are better for those with full calendars. If your budget is limited, group classes are a more affordable option. Group classes are also well-suited to those who prefer a more social experience and a group learning environment.
6. How long will it take for me to become a good dancer?
Progress varies by the individual, and the amount of time you devote to practicing what you learn. We recommend our one-time introductory offer, which includes an evaluation and consultation that allows us to assess your background and get a clear understanding of your goals. Based on this, we structure a program that will immediately get you learning at your own pace; and like learning to ride a bike, once you own dance skills, you have them for life!
7. Where can I use my newfound skills?
A better question would be, "Where can’t I use my skills?" Unlike seasonal sports, you can go partner dancing every night of the week, in nightclubs, at black-tie functions, weddings, private parties and local dance spots.
8. Which dances are most useful to learn?
During your initial interview (see introductory offer in the “Get Started” section), we will help you determine which dances are most practical for you based on your specific goals, needs, lifestyle, and musical tastes.
9. What is the age range of the students at Balliamos?
Most of our students are between the ages of eighteen and sixty, but no one is too young or too old to get started. This sport is truly universal in accessibility and enjoys a greater longevity than most others.
