Cha-Cha
The Cha-Cha is an offshoot of the Mambo and is a stepchild of the Swing as it is danced to a “1-2-3, step-step” rhythm. Cha-Cha is versatile in that it can be danced to authentic Cuban music, Latin pop or Latin rock. Cha-Cha is one of the five competitive dances in both International Latin and American Rhythm.
Rumba
African slaves in Cuba originated the Rumba over 400 years ago. The Rumba is a sensual favorite characterized by a smooth, subtle hip motion and a rather heavy walking step. It is a competitive dance in both International Latin and American Rhythm.
Bolero
Often called the “Cuban Dance of Love” because of its dreamy tempo, the Bolero was introduced in the United States in the 1930s. Bolero is a cousin of the Rumba and is the slowest of the five competitive American Rhythm dances.
Mambo
The Mambo originated in Cuba and is similar to Salsa. Hip movements give this dance a sexy, energetic vibe. The Mambo is one of the most popular dances in the U.S. and is one of the five American Rhythm competitive dances.
East Coast Swing
A form of social-partner dance that evolved from the Lindy Hop in the 1940s, East Coast Swing is also known as Eastern Swing, Jitterbug, American Swing, East Coast Lindy and Triple Swing. It is based on 6-count patterns and contrasts most swing dance music with its basic 4-count rhythm. Swing is an ideal beginner dance and is part of the five American Rhythm competitive dances.
