American Style Smooth
Foxtrot
Inspired by ragtime, this new phase of ballroom was born in the early 20th century. The Foxtrot evolved from quick ballroom dancing that expressed the slow syncopated 4/4 rhythm. Foxtrot is one of the five competitive dances in both International Standard and American Smooth.
Waltz
Introduced into society in 1812, the Waltz is a graceful, smooth dance that evokes romance and elegance. Long, gliding movements comprise this slow routine along with continuous turns and rise and fall. The Waltz is a competitive dance in both International Standard and American Smooth.
Viennese Waltz
The Viennese Waltz was born in the suburbs of Vienna and the alpine region of Austria, in the early seventeenth century. It is the oldest of the current ballroom dances and is a fast-moving, challenging and exciting dance. There are two styles of the Viennese Waltz. The International is danced in a closed position, while the American has much more freedom, both in dance positions and syllabus.
Tango
For the last 50 years the 4-beat Tango rhythm has endured mystery and evolution. The earliest traces of the Tango are noted back to Argentina in the 19th century, to a folk dance called the “Milonga”. Tango is a competitive dance in both International Standard and American Smooth.
